Intelligence is a set of abilities which allows us to: acquire knowledge, think rationally, act purposefully, deal effectively with the environment. Factor analysis: reduces variable to related clusters of abilities called factors. Savant: have below average intelligence, but excel in one particular area. 7 primary mental abilities: space ability, verbal comprehension, word fluency, number facility, perceptual speed, rote memory, reasoning. Guliford: more than 100 distinct measureable mental abilities, operations, contents, and products, described as a 3d cube or space. Cattell & horn: believed that there are two subtypes of the g-factor: crystalized and fluid intelligence. Crystallized intelligence: ability to apply previously acquired information to a current problem, based on long term memory. Fluid intelligence: ability to deal with novel problems, must be able to reason abstractly, think logically, and participate in creative problem solving, need and adequate short term/working memory. Age variations: younger rely on fluid intelligence, older rely on crystallized intelligence, often loose fluid intelligence.
