Document Summary

Many today think the territorial state is no longer as efficient as it once was. Marxists: class conflict - state resolves it. But - state is whatever does this work. After hegel, political sciences rejected the concept as abstract and unnecessary. To create a state rather than another form, is to identify an area of location. Domination: max weber: monopoly of coercion within a given territory. We see a system of states interacting in complex ways. Protects its people from each other and also from external threats. Borders define what is internal and external in the first place. The state is that which creates the duality. Feudalism was not territorial, and in fact transcended territories. Resources were established based on need because of war. Used finances to support army for war. War therefore made the state, bringing a territorial dynamic. From here on in, each monarchy would be able to establish the religious character of the people within their territory.
