Chapter 3: giving and taking offense: explain what blasphemy is, and describe the moral issues surrounding blasphemy laws. Blasphemy is the act of speaking sacrilegiously about god (or any other religious entity). Hate speech is expression that aims to cause extreme offense and to vilify its target audience. It degrades people on the basis of religion, race, or sexual orientation. Pornography is a kind of image designed to arouse the viewer sexually by representing explicit sexual action of some kind, though not all pornography is visual. Hardcore pornography is particularly explicit, while softcore pornography sets milder limits on what it depicts. Moral legalists believe that the role of the state is in part to ensure the survival of a culture, a moral climate, a way of life. Individual freedom is not a value that should be allowed priority over traditional family values, such as those most christians subscribe to and most christian apologists preach.
