3 kinds of writing assignments: a literature book review/lab report. Attempt to summarize anything from a single article to an entire school of thought. Not intended to convince, but to report. Your view of something that is already done: critical analysis. Literature review that ends with a brief evaluation of the subject presented. Provide clear exposition and provide an evaluation (reflect on strengths and weaknesses of the matter reviewed, be critical) Prolonged attempt to present and defend a thesis. Convincing all (or majority) of those that read the essay that the position taken is the position they should adopt due to the arguments you have presented. If the professor cannot understand the what the writer is saying, there is no way they can be convinced their thesis is correct. Claim you will be trying to convince the reader to accept. Every word/sentence/paragraph should contribute to making your thesis more convincing. Explanation of the issue/problem /literature that stimulated your thesis.
