Utilitarianism theory: do the action that benefits the most people and minimizes harm. Must always being about a good state of affairs. Greatest happiness for greatest number of people. Continually think of the consequences of you action, if more people respond positively (pleasure) than negatively (pain) you may act. Or add up the pleasure and subtract the pain and if it"s a positive you can act. Whatever calculation you go with must bring about utility. 65, bentham placed too much emphasis on quantity of pleasure, as opposed to how we should construe pleasure. Mill thought not all pleasure is the same (higher order and lower order) If it"s only construed as lower order, than you may take utility as how animals contrue pleasure. Humans are advanced in the pleasure they truly desire is higher order. Utility should be grounded in empirical evidence.
