Initially, we have reason to mistrust our senses we are unsure of the truth (skeptic) Global skepticism: skeptical about everything in the world. Belief involves both the intellect and the will (implicit in p1. 6) To say that you believe something is to say that your intellect has delivered to you some punitive fact about the nature of reality, and you choose to believe this. Ethics of belief: if you believe things, you can become morally accountable for your beliefs: it is not possible for us to doubt that we exist while we are doubting cogito ergo sum (p1. 7) I think therefore i am i am doubting therefore i am thinking, therefore i exist. You have the experience of doubt, and therefore you exist in order to have something to be doing the doubting. This claim is the foundation for the argument of certainty.
