Self-concept: the relatively stable set of perceptions we have of ourselves. Typically there is a negative affect on the relationship. Body image: the subjective perception of the physical self, appearance and capabilities, self-concept + self-esteem = the self . Gender identity: western culture is quite rigid in its view of gender recognizing only male/female. Other cultures recognize many genders: biologically speaking there are graduations of gender, sometimes gender is clear, sometimes it is not i. e. , transgender, transvestite, transgender: person feels they are not their assigned gender. Eating disorders: psycholigical disorder characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits, developed countries - an epidemic of eating disorders. 3% of women have eating disorders and up to 22% have some traits or behaviours (kneisl et al, 2004): eating has meaning beyond sustaining life. Includes: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and eating. Disorders nos (not otherwise specified): anorexia has highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses (10%).
