Goals: learners will have the opportunity to: Analysis: differentiate between inductive and deductive thinking, compare and contrast the ontologies and epistemologies of research paradigms, compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative data analysis, discuss the benefits and limitations conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis; Research question and hypothesis: hypothesis, a prediction, only in quantitative, comes from the research question, becomes a statement, research question, independent variables- cause, dependent variables- outcome/ effect, independent variable comes before dependent variable. Sampling design: quantitative, probability- chance, equal chance to be selected, randomness, narr, qualitative, not conveniently, more specific. Data types: narrative- story telling, extract from the story, numeric, mean, median, mode. Internal validity: causality, are the two variables related to each other, external validity, does my study reflect the general population, generalizability. Immediate response of icu staff: thought (np and 2 rns): Ways of knowing: empirical, have own knowledge, through empirical studies/research, follow scientific principles, personal, personally experience something, own knowledge from experience.
