Dr. josef breuer used hypnosis on a girl who had fallen ill of hysteria: she described her moods and thoughts to him, repeated the process over and over, and eventually freed her from her troubles. Involves taking unconscious thoughts and feelings and making them conscious. Found that hysterical symptoms have meaning are not random occurrences. Geing rid of hysterical symptoms involves uncovering their meaning. Breuer and freud studied hysteria diligently hypnoized paients, got to the root of their problems, freed them of their symptoms. Found that hysterical symptoms were brought about when a traumaic event occurs, and a large amount of afect is strangulated and repressed. These traumaic events usually dated back to the individual"s early days. Breuer posited that pathogenic ideas produced their traumaic efect because they arose during hypnoid states.
