Memory and wriing as a form of communicaion. Memory is a form of communicaion we use to inform us of important things to come. We use wriing to organize our memory for preparaion of the future. We don"t trust our memory because they have deteriorated over the last thousand years due to the progress of reading and wriing. As you learn to read and write you use your memory less. Memory palace: simonides of ceos, 5th century bc, was in a banquet hall when the building collapsed. Was the sole survivor, and was asked to recount who was in the building at the ime. Goes back to hunter gatherer origins where our ancestors needed to forage for edible foods. They would have to remember how to get back to these plants and back to their home. Their memory of the space around them for survival. Visually people needed to recognize if a person was friend or foe.
