1840s 50s, spread of photographic studios in large urban centers. Was a ime consuming process at this point in ime. Made on copper sheets non-reproducible (limitation) Could make muliple prints muliple copies: important innovaion in terms of mass spread. Wet must do process before the collodion dries. Art of this process is knowing when to stop developing the image. Image changes from a negaive to a posiive, then the image is varnished. The unpredictability is part of the interest and the challenge. Process became more mobile: no longer needed portable darkrooms. Could shoot outdoors, in remote areas: more travel type photos. Photo included could only exist because of this technological change. First popular genre of photography: mathew brady 1840s-1870s. Had studios in large urban centers in usa. Embodied ideas about naional history, model ciizenship: wanted to capture the image in a way that expressed something deeper, bigger, one"s character could be shown through a photograph.
