Viral meningitis is less severe and resolves without specific treatment. Bacterial meningitis can be rapid and life threating. Protective cellular structure that restricts passage of chemicals, toxins and mi blood to cns. Protects cns from peripheral immune system (few immune cells in cns) Astrocytes and pericytes provide support to other cells in cns. Microglia cells are the tissue macrophages of cns. White blood cells and abs are not usually present in cns. Rare but very severe (can kill in a few days) Meningitis: meningitidis: gram , pneumoniae: gram, influenzae b: gram , monocytogenes: gra, agalactiae: gram +, m -, diplococci m +, coccus, chains m -, coccobacillus ram +, rod, no capsule, food-borne m +, coccus, chains. Trojan-horse: hidden in a macrophage as intracellular pathogen, macroph between endothelial cells. S/s in children and adults: similar to head injury/trauma s/s. Hallmarks: high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion. Hallmark: bulge in soft spot on top of head (fontanel)
