Kinesiology 3474A/B Lecture 6: Training & Practice
Kinesiology 3474 - Psychology of Interventions (Midterm)
Lecture 6
Training seems to have the strongest association with expertise. Some researchers such as
Ericsson et al. (2007) propose that experts are always made and never born. Furthermore, it
will take at least a decade of deliberate practice to achieve expertise.
- Training the biggest factor when deliver expertise
- Usually takes about a decade to reach the expert level of sport (or 10000 hours rule) –
this is what is needed if you are to become an expert
o Enough time to accumulate the practice necessary
Deliberate Practice
Deliberate practice involves considerable specific, and sustained effort to work on things you
cannot do well or even at all. It entails working on your weaknesses and not your strengths.
- Trying to improve skills
In the theory of deliberate practice by Ericsson and his colleagues, it is argued that an
idiidual’s leel of attaiet is directly proportional to the amount of practice hours
accumulated within a domain. This does not imply that extensive experience within a domain
(ex: sport) will inevitably lead to expertise. Continued improvements in performance depend on
deliberate practice.
- 10 year rule or 10 000 hour rule (time it takes to master a skill)
Characteristics of Deliberate practice: it was initially investigated with violinists and was found
to consist of activities that are highly relevant, require effort, but are not inherently enjoyable
• Practice on your own (most relevant, least enjoyable)
• With an instructor
• With a group (least relevant, more enjoyable)
When deliberate practice has been examined in sport, the deliberate practice framework was
modified to include activities that are:
1) Highly relevant (in wrestling – most relevant thing to do was practice with a partner who
is the same level as you)
2) Require a great deal of physical effort
3) Require a great deal of concentration
4) May be enjoyable
