Informal roles: evolve from interactions among group members. A team"s effectiveness can be improved by facilitating role clarity and role acceptance. A standard or belief about what is appropriate or inappropriate behaviour for group members. Norms can have powerful effect on behaviour, thus it is important for the leader (with input) to establish positive group norms i. e. initiation rights. Norm for productivity (example punctuality, attendance, preparedness) Decline in individual productivity lack of coordination & loss of motivation (known as social loafing)
