Competition as a motivator (chapter 5: competition is a strong motivational force embedded in all sporting situations and in many recreational settings as well. However, the coach or leader has very little control over it: description of competition: a situational process that is either zero sum or non-zero sum (reward structures) and is either direct or indirect. Zero sum: if one wins and the other loses, one negates the other. Non zero sum: a trade-off e. g. giving a handicap to increase competition, both sides get something out. Direct: against other people (a race, a wrestling match, a soccer game) Indirect: against, say, the element (rock climbing), or standard (best time) Determines competitiveness: response approach or avoid the situation (i. e. win-oriented person against considerably better opponent.
