Document Summary
Refers to the process by which individuals attempt to control the impressions others form of them: we do this consciously and subconsciously. Its very different from ones private self: without an audience there is no motive to make a good impression. Individual difference variable: personality trait, have a degree of it, rooted in impression managements and self presentation. Social physique and self handicapping are two individual difference variables. Private self presentation: maintenance of private self occurs entirely at the cognitive level (self is the audience, maintenance of public self is always overt behaviour (others are the audience) Interest is only on factors that affect self-presentations to others: when looking in mirror you are having a private presentation and come become public when start interacting with other. Two discrete processes, each of which operates according to different principles and is affected by different antecedents. Impression construction--the kind of impression management tactics that are used to make the desired impression.
