Lecture 1 - a history of social media. We spend a lot of time on social networking sites. Social media is an extension of social networking and social bonding. Social bonding has helped us to survive and provides enjoyment, while giving meaning to our lives. People"s feelings of self-worth comes from their identification with particular groups, this is why being rejected is so painful. Building a large group of friends is based on feelings social identity and connectedness. Facebook and twitter are leading the way in health and communication. The internet was born in 1969 with the demonstration of the 4-node apranet network, however the internet did not take off until the early 1990s. The diffusion of desktop pcs finally created the environment in which the internet could flourish. The world wide web was invented by a british computer scientist - used of a way of communicating academic and professional information.
