1867 (constitution act in 1982): created federal dominion of canada and set up framework for canadian government. 1920s first municipal hospitals mb, sk, ab. 1936 bc and ab passed health insurance legislation but had no system under which to operate it. 1950 bc and ab followed sk with similar plans. Reimburse or cost share half the provincial costs for specified diagnostic and health services. Within 4 years all the provinces had agreed to provide publicly funded inpatient hospital and diagnostic services. Medical care act offered to cover costs of services of doctors outside of hospitals. Canada health act replaced hidsa and medical care act, consolidated them into one. No major legislative changes since then but some reforms and provincial and federal plans to improve the system. 2000 federal provincial and territorial agreements- pharmaceutical management, health info and comm tech, health equipment and infrastructure. Federal increased cash transfers to provincial in support of health.
