If the persons health and cognitive status has declined drastically, then assistive living facilities may be the way to go. However, if the person is at a place where home adaptations like improved lighting, grab bars, ramps and more may make living independently possible, then it can be a great option. Beyond the home, it may be harder to make the choice to age in place if the community is not age-friendly. We would have to consider community characteristics like accessible outdoor areas, affordable housing, public transportation, and opportunities for seniors to be socially active. Ageing in place involves: personal competence (biological/psychological, home environment, community infrastructure, ties & support.
