Themes: 1. disunity and diversity: native society and contact. Language stocks: in europe there were multiple language stocks. So to, native americans. they were over 1400 native languages spoken among the people before the european arrival. Settlement patterns: some native societies had full blown cities. cities with apartment complex, markets, canals, administrative buildings. more progressed than london, england. Some were more nomadic, living in tipis and travelling with the hunt. Population on the eve of european arrival: when the europeans began to arrive, it was estimated in north america alone there were 60 million native americans living in north america alone. This is not a new world, it is a civilization. Society of individuals who had skills in architecture, math, engineering that far outstrip what you saw in places such as ireland at the same time period. The mayans became so good at this architecture that they would carve at the top of mountains their civilization.
