New visibility of gay and lesbian communities in the 20th c. Greek and roman relationships between men and boys. Same sex relationships and how they are viewed changes across time periods. For the most part same sex relations have been over looked or ignored as long as sodomy was not involved. It wasn"t sexual conduct that made people nervous it was gender confusion (men who were not showing all their masculinity) There was an emergence of a homosexual identity and social culture why we really see this emerge is bc of the creation of new public space in new urban settings. There are new public spaces devoted to leisure pursuits. At this time we see a homosexual identity and lesbian identity after. Ww1 which is interesting bc at this time heterosexuality was being strongly encouraged and promoted. This emphasis is in direct reaction to ww1 after wars there is always a societal desire for normalcy and social stability.
