Primarily we are looking at europe in 1700s. The enlightenment period important to sexuality because this is where modern ideas about sexuality and the body take place. Also important because up until this point the church regulated where/why/everything about sex and was in charge of the penalties an punishments for those that did not follow the rules with penitential literature and punishments (i. e. public punishments)
