Britain in decline by mid-point of 20th century: wwi & wwii economic strain. Increasing american presence brings america cultural influences: music, swing wwii, blues and r&b post wwii. Skiffle: offshoot of country folk combined w/ country blues, basic acoustic instruments combined w/ homemade instruments, popularized by lonnie donegan. Started out as skiffle band: quarry men. John and ringo both products of broken homes. Paul"s mother died when he was 14. Early work = covers of american rock n" roll and r&b. I just want to make love to you. Transnational played american blues and r&b so well nyc songwriters wrote songs specifically for them: we"ve gotta get out of this place. Embraced the mod scene influenced by pete townshend and ealing british r&b scene. Wrote can"t explain: how the music made him feel also related to alienation and inability to articulate his feelings. Inspired by auto destructive art from ealing art college: destroying instruments.
