Patients, doctors would go to apothecary shops where they would get the medications they need. What doctors did was they would prescribe medicines that would allow you to feel the effect right away. This concept of taking a drug that gives an immediate reaction was thought by some that it was bad for you. Prior to the 20th century it was risky (there"s no anesthetics, no sterilization, feeling the pain) Anaesthesia (numbing the patient) antisepsis (sterilizing the operating room) allowed surgery to become safer. Surgery became safer now stopped taking drugs because drugs may have got rid of the pain temporary. That displacement remains true until after the second world war.
