Genre genre study = studying a group of films. Group of films can be unified by subject, theme, style, plot pattern and o emotion o classic genres. Recurring pattern of familiarity and repetition, difference and variations, o development, unity and function across a body of films. Comedy, romance, western, sci-fi, musical, horror, fantasy, documentary, o drama, epic, experimental/avant-garde, war, biopic, film noir, gangster, adventurer, disaster, detective/mystery o. Easier to recognize than to define a tacit agreement between the critics, artist and the audience. Horror: slasher, supernatural, psychological, torture porn, creature o o o o o o o o o feature genre hybrids. Films in the same genre can be very different. Matrix: sci-fi that borrows from martial arts film. Thomas schatz: simply stated, a genre film whether a western or a musical, a screwball comedy or a gangster film involves familiar, one-dimensional characters acting out a predictable story pattern within a familiar setting .
