Environmental Science 1021F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Flash Freezing, Azolla, Selective Breeding
Document Summary
Growth in human population: due to agricultural revolution, more food = more to feed, led to healthier people, less deaths, higher life expectancy, etc, growth in china became a political issue, famine occurred. Canadian agriculture: we only farm a small percentage of our overall land territory, 7% is used for agriculture (not the full availability of farmable land but most of it), 11% of the worlds landmass is used for crops. Monoculture = a farming method in which 1 variety of crop is planted, typically in rows. Normally requires large inputs of water, fertilizer, and pesticides: boosts yields, the issue with planting this way is that it makes the land very vulnerable to pests. If all of the pests are not exterminated, they can develop pesticide resistance and can reproduce: either up the dosage or it is useless, individual insects are not resistant, they come resistant by passing their genes along.
