Easy to forget how influential he is and how radical he was at the time. Went to harvard, became a minister out of school. Had a large crisis of faith when his wife died young due to tuberculosis. After this, became a public speaker and went from there. At the time he was considered a philosopher, but now he strongly belongs to the literary community. He was 1 of 2/3 largest players in the movement. Started out philosophical, but soon became political. By the 1850s, people were really questioning if american capitalism was working for people. The (cid:498)genre(cid:499) is a cousin of romanticism. Ministers have a lot of power because god deals through them and not you. Relationship between individual and society: what can individuals do. God must intervene for you to be saved. (cid:498))t leaves me in the splendid labyrinth of my perception, to wander without end(cid:499)
