Madness" and distress" (good words used by survivors and activists people are torn on this) Madness" can in some cases be a good descriptor of periods of extreme stress: helps establish understanding of experience. For others, madness" was a negative way of expressing medicalized individual thinking: negatively portrayed by media. Need to move beyond an illness" model of mental health issues and a need to understand their social relations and to stop focusing so individually with solutions. Need to talk about the range of issues that form the problems that we have: recognizing that there"s more to it. Help create solidarity and shared understandings between different user groups and improve the changes for joint campaigning. Help link different experiences of madness and distress so that they might be associated with broader oppression and discrimination.
