Aeson (rightful king) was driven from the throne by his brother pelias (bad brother) Aeson"s son jason was sent away from home to protect him from pelias. Jason was raised and educated in the countryside by the centaur chiron. Heracles and achilles were also raised and educated by the centaur chiron. Pelias received a prophecy that a youth with a single sandal would overthrow him. Jason came of age and then returned home to iolcus. Crossing a river, jason loses a sandal and wins the friendship of hera. Divine test: helps hera (disguised as old lady) cross the river. Pelias imposes an impossible quest= retrieval of the golden fleece. The golden eece belonged to a magical ying ram that once carried phrixus and helle (brother and sister of a minor goddess) who were eeing from an evil step mother.
