Big leap from being nomads to having a settlement with the building of straw huts (which was a typical greek settlement) Palace at knossos 3. 2 acres, 3 stories tall. Greeks preferred marble thus they had more pillars in their buildings. Centralized government palace was the center of everything that happened in that culture. Food, goods, manufactured goods were all made and brought to the palace: laws, religious ceremonies carried out at palace totalitarian state. Series of pillars running in the middle of a large room. Could put curtains/structures between the pillars, turning the large room into smaller rooms. This feature was found in many of the palaces. Craftsmanship is secondary to meaning of art all art had a purpose, less attention to the craftsmanship because the culture didn"t have the necessary resources to create beautiful paintings/statues.
