Kerameikos (still in athens) - cemetery for the rich. Located along the sacred way as you pass out of the city through the dipylon gate. Called kerameikos because it was originally where pottery was made. Originally where smelly/smoky stuff took place (at the edge of town) like pottery manufacture. The dipylon gate led to the academy and the sacred gate led into the cemetery. Off the road that led to the academy where the tombs of heroes is. The pompeion was the building used to get the procession ready before it started on the sacred way to the acropolis. The cemetery was rediscovered in april 1863 when a greek worker dug up a stele. The stele found by the worker is over 3. 5m tall (the stele on the right on the right image) A boundary stone with the inscription boundary of the kerameikos solidified archaeologists" initial hypothesis.
