Worked 143 - 176 ce, traveller and geographer. Wrote the first guide book of the monuments of greece (10 books/chapters) Ex: he describes what he saw at mycenae + lions gate. Used as a guide by later travellers for centuries (today too) There are parts of the ring wall left, including the gate with the lions standing on it. They say this was the work of the kyklopes . People in classical + roman antiquity couldn"t believe mycenae was built by human hands. His writings remained the most important means of divercoinver greece until 19th century. Maybe not first book but first complete+survived - used often in 18th and 19th centuries. Modern scholars questions his reliability but checked work is correct. 80 years after pausania, greece ravaged by barbarians. A troubled period for greece - ruled for 6 centuries by foreign masters. Invasions of the slavic peoples (6th - 9th centuries ad (second dark age))
