Document Summary
Provide an introduction to strength design using the limit states design approach. Basic strength designs for trusses, beams, and frames with respect to: To select a structural member that can carry the specific loads and satisfy the performance requirements. Two important design criteria need to be addressed: Strength design the member must be strong enough to carry the loads. Serviceability design - the member must be serviceable. Def: the margin of safety is established through load and resistance factors, which are calibrated using probabilistic analysis. I = load factors ( i > 1 typically) Qi = load effects due to specified loads. The load and resistance factors are intended to account for the uncertainties in loads and material properties so that the probability of failure is kept at an acceptable level. Normal load, load specified by the deisgn code of the unfactured load. Used in the serviceability limit (sls) states design. Used in the ultimate limit states design (uls)
