Chemistry 1027A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Public Knowledge, Atomic Number, Krypton
Document Summary
Verification of a discovery of a new element. International union of pure and applied chemistry (global organization) verified the discovery and assignment of elements with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117, and 118. The iupac has certain criteria for verifying the elements. When an element is discovered, it is given a placeholder name. When it is verified, the person or people who discovered is are asked to name the element. Can be names after a mythological concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property or a scientist. Universalism: all scientific claims/discoveries must be evaluated using pre-established impersonal criteria. Must be related to objective data and transcend race, class, political and/or religious barriers. Communality: science is public knowledge and is the common property of the entire scientific community. The research is publicly funded, so the information gathered should be accessed publicly however often times it is not. (should be accessed by open access journals)
