Usually mutualistic; i. e. both fungi and plant benefits. Fungi also form associations with bryophytes, like liverworts. Specialized structures are mycorrhizae; fungi and plants are mycorrhizal. List of multiple diff kinds of mycorrhizal associations. Only have to know the yellow: endo- and ectomycorrhizae. Endomycorrhizae are formed by glomeromycota, and in them they form arbuscules and may also form vesicles (swollen cells) and live intracellularly within the plant root cells (inside, hence endo) Ectomycorrhizae are formed by basidio and ascomycota; they form structures on the roots of their host plants and stay extracellular, hence ecto. Some of the same fungi form a diff sub-type of mycorrhizae with specific type of plant called arbutis. Some of the same fungi form monotropoid mycorrhizae. Blueberries (ericoid) have diff mycorrhizae, and so do orchids. And fungal group associations can also be pseudo-mycorrhizae, which kind of look like mycorrhizae but they"re more pathogenic than mutualistic.
