Natural selection: investigation evolution by natural selection: darwinian snails activity, conclusions from simulation, tness (de nition and calculations, adaptation (de nition and constraints, microevolution (link to genetics and de nition, darwin"s observations and inferences. Importance of variation in the population: all the snails had the same shell thickness, variation stayed the same. Problems using a correlation: can"t tell the cause, must make assumptions that parent beak depth equals offspring beak depth, could be 3rd variable involved. Ex. all grew in similar environment so maybe relationship has more to do with living in the same environment instead of gene. Importance of selective survival and reproduction: by chance, the thicker shelled snails were eaten more often. Conclusions from snail investigation: when there is no phenotype variation, a population will not evolve, if a phenotype is heritable offspring will re ect those individuals who reproduced, otherwise offspring phenotypes will be random.
