Document Summary

Allow both energy and matter in and out. Food is matter and energy ex. glucose, amino acids, fatty acids. Photosynthesis is an example where matter and energy are separate: photon has no mass, only energy, photosynthetic organisms breathe nitrogen and carbon (nutrients) but those don"t have energy, only matter. Molecules break down example of entropy: proteins break down, mrna breaks down, cycle continues in living systems. Bonds within a protein are constrained because of peptide bonds. Protein constrains amino acids they can only move a certain number of ways. Glucose constrains possible space the atom can occupy. Breakdown = waste and heat energy released to the environment: heat and waste molecules increase disorder in surroundings, temperature rises because of the second law of thermodynamics (entropy) Protein synthesis is a negative/low entropy phenomenon taking disorder and making order out of it. Taking things more disordered (more spread out) and making them more orderly (energy is more concentrated)
