Document Summary

Ecosystem: all the organisms living in some defined space, biotic community and its abiotic environment functioning as a system, open and not closed systems. Energy inputs and outputs: usually light input (sunlight) Give off energy to other ecosystems or environment: heat or chemical or sound. Nutrient inputs and outputs: chemicals, compounds, elements. 4 major functional components: producers autotrophs, new biomass is being created from inorganic substances, biomass that has already been created are being turned into new forms. Make their own food from inorganic compounds: consumers heterotrophs. Every organisms that has to eat another organisms. Every ecosystem requires a source of energy: usually from the sun light/solar energy, photoautotrophs. Primary producers harvest/fix energy through photosynthesis: chemoautotrophs. Primary producers harvest/fix energy through chemical means. Chemical elements or compounds needed for growth or reproduction: organic (carbon containing, sugars, amino acids, lipids) & inorganic (co2, micronutrients (needed in trace quantities) & macronutrients (needed in large quantities)
