Document Summary

16. 1b lamarck proposed that acquired traits were inherited. Jean baptiste de lamarck said species change over time: proposed the perfecting principle whereby simple organisms evolved into more complex ones, moving up the scale of nature. Lamarck was wrong: structural changes acquired during an organism"s lifetime are not inherited by the next generation. Lamarck believed that life had begun through spontaneous generation. The result of this selective breeding is that, today, a typical cob of corn looks nothing like teosinte. 16. 3a the source of variation in a population is random mutation. Other mutations may be harmful and lower fitness, while many others are neutral, having no effect on fitness. 16. 3b examples of natural selection: natural selection is referred to as a theory of evolution because its basic tenet, that heritable variation leads to differential survival and reproduction. Mutations are changes to an organism"s dna that create diversity within a population by introducing new alleles.
