Life tables are used to show survival, reproductive rates and how these things vary. Characteristics of a population can vary with size. During life cycle of bed bug, the larva are all very distinctive sizes: can use age, size, or lifecycle stage to follow the population because they are all tightly correlated in this case. In other populations, you don"t always see this prefect correlation between life cycle stage and size and age: ie. The apple tree can stay as a sapling for decades: unlike humans who will progress to the next stage despite resources, the apple tree will not. Size is not a good indication of lifecycle stage and age of the tree. Demography: study of the vital statistics of populations and how they change over time.
