Cancer isn"t just one disease: sarcomas originate in muscle, fibrous tissue or fat known as soft tissue sarcomas. Benign not cancerous; can occur almost anywhere; may cause some health problems but are not life-threatening. What causes cancer: damaged genes (by external environmental factors; smoking, viruses, chemicals, uv radiation, inheritance of certain genes, a combination of factors. The leading cause of death in north america. Strikes victims of all ages (but more prevalent for the old and the young) Will become even more prevalent as the population ages. Cancer is characterized by genetic and biochemical defects. Biochemistry and molecular biology provide avenues for cures. Cancer is the disease of biomolecules and thus the study of biomolecules should lead us to cures. Benign (adenoma) encapsulated; don"t go anywhere: they can grow in size and be problematic but they can be surgically removed because they are all in one spot. Malignant (adenocarcinoma) not contained and they tend to spread.
