Lecture 27: The Pelvic Girdle and Muscles of Anterior Thigh
Objectives
● Review the bones of the hand and wrist
● Describe the 10 muscles of the posterior compartment of the forearm
● Describe the general organization of the intrinsic muscles of the hand
● Describe the 4 intrinsic muscles of the hand that moves the thumb
Review of the Intrinsic muscles of the hand
●Thenar muscles (4)
○ Move the thumb
●Hypothenar muscles (3)
○ Move the pinking
●Palmer muscles
○ Fine finger movements
○ 2 groups
○Lumbricals
■ Intrinsic muscles
■ Worm-like
■ Cords of muscles
■No bony attachments
● Originate from the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus
● Insert into the extensor expansion (on the back of the hand)
■ Bring about flexion at the metacarpophalangeal joint (knuckle) and
extension at the interphalangeal joint (along the finger)
○Interosseous
■ Originate between the metacarpal bones
■ Fravel into the digests
■3 PAD (palmer)
● Superficial
● Adducts the fingers (bring to midline)
● Pennate muscle
■4 DAB (dorsal)
● Deeper
● Abduct the fingers (splay the fingers)
● Bipennate muscles
○ Attached to more than one bone at their origin
●Innervation
○ Median nerve
■ 3 most lateral thenar muscles
■ 2 lateral lumbricals
■ More lateral palm sensation
○ Ulnar nerve
■ 2 medial lumbricals

■ All other intrinsic muscles of the hand
■ More medial palm sensation
○ Radial nerve
■ No motor function
■ Provides cutaneous sensation of the back of the lateral side of the hand
The Pelvic Girdle and Muscles of Anterior Thigh
Objective
● Describe the movement of the lower limb
● Describe the bony structure of the Lower Limb (Pelvic Girdle, Femur Tibia, Fibula and
Foot)
● Describe the organization of muscles of the thigh into 3 compartments
● Describe the 7 muscles of the anterior compartment of the thigh
○ Which muscle constitute the “quads” ?
