Anatomy and Cell Biology 3319 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Spinal Stenosis, Sciatica, Tibial Nerve
Document Summary
Jan 26th lower extremity 3 innervation of lower limb and muscles of the leg. Arises from 1st 4 lumbar spinal nerves: l1-l4 (sometimes l5) Some of its minor (top) branches innervate the abdominal wall but main branches descend to innervate the anterior thigh via femoral and obturator nerves. Originates from spinal nerves l4-s4 found directly behind lumbar plexus. ~1/2 of branches of sacral plexus serve the buttocks and lower limb but most important branch for lower limb is (cid:862)s(cid:272)iati(cid:272)(cid:863) (cid:374)er(cid:448)e, (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h di(cid:448)ides i(cid:374)to ti(cid:271)ial (cid:374)er(cid:448)e a(cid:374)d (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)o(cid:374) fibular nerves (aka paraneal) Femoral nerve: anterior compartment of thigh muscles. Obturator nerve: medial compartment of thigh muscles. Posterior compartment of leg; intrinsic foot muscles: common peroneal (fibular) nerve. Deep branch anterior compartment of leg. Flexor digitorum longus ** (plantar flex the foot) Flexor hallucis (big toe) longus ** (plantar flex the foot) Origin: via two heads from medial and lateral condyles of femur. Insertion: posterior calcaneous bone, via calcaneal tendon (achillies)
