Anatomy and Cell Biology 2221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Kyphosis, Osteology, Tubercle
Document Summary
Head: bony expansion carried on a narrow neck. Projections that are sites of muscle & ligament attachment. Tuberosity: large rounded projection (can be rough) The skeleton consists of bones, cartilage, ligaments, and joints. 206 bones are grouped into 2 groups: axial skeleton (green) = 80 bones, appendicular skeleton (tan) = 126 bones. Appendicular: upper and lower limbs, shoulder (pectoral) girdle attaches upper limb to trunk, pelvic girdle attaches lower limbs to trunk. As you age, you gain different curves along your spine. Either have 26 or 33 vertebrae depending on how you count sacral and coccyx. Contains an atlas (c1, holds up your skull) and axis. There are a few differences in this section: (c2) foramen through the atlas vertebral arteries, veins, and nerve. Axis has a dens that projects through the vertebral. Vertical, compressive forces on the c spine on the atlas can cause a jefferson (burst) fracture.
