Document Summary

Characteristics of a synovial joint: articular cartilage- covers bone ends- water loving and spongy- shock absorber, articular capsule- holds fluid, synovial fluid- reduces friction, articular disc. An example of a simple ball and socket synovial joint with more limited movement. Articular cartilage around most of it- break at the anterior and inferior aspect. On top of cartilage- labrum that extends socket to make it deeper so head of femur can fit in labrum does not extend down to anterior lateral aspect- 2 ends are joined by transverse acetabular ligament. Acetabular foramen- close to obturator foramen- how blood supply reaches head of femur. Head of femur is covered by articular cartilage w. exception of fovea- ligament of the head of the femur- helps hold head of femur into acetabulum- an artery that passes though ligament as well. All twisting so when your standing they twist head of femur into acetabulum- don"t need to use as many muscles to maintain posture.
