Conservatism was the prevailing ideology in north america until the great depression (1930"s) After the recession of the 1970"s, conservatism has been revived and re- packaged (neo- conservatism) Individuals are motivated by gain (profit) and power (control of others) All human behavior is motivated by two things (theory of psychological hedonism) : Jeremy bentham (1748 1832) Appetites (pleasure, desires the proverbial carrot ) Aversions (avoiding pain the proverbial stick ) Conservatism & nature of society. Communities have no rights, values, or collective interests in and of themselves. There is no such thing as society, there are only individuals . Some individuals are better than others (morally superior, wiser, etc. ) Social hierarchy (inequality) = necessary. Central role of government is to protect people"s lives and property. Conservatism & social justice.
