Many child and adolescent problems: involve a failure to show expected developmental progress. Familiarity with normal/abnormal development required: are not entirely abnormal. Childhood disorders are accompanied by layers of abnormal behaviour or develop- ment: visible, alarming (delinquency, physical aggression, more subtle (teasing, peer rejection, hidden (parental rejection, depression) Strengths historically overlooked: confidence, high self esteem - protective factors, because they undermine risk fac- tors, health adaptation through coping/ways of compensating for difficulties, strengths-based intervention. Disorders are commonly viewed as deviances from normal: boundaries btwn normal and abnormal functioning can be arbitrary.
