Diagnosis: process of determining whether the particular problem meets all the criteria for a psychological disor- der. Clinician starts by collecting a lot of info across a broad range of the individual"s functioning to determine the possible source of the issue. Then narrows the focus by ruling out problems in some areas and concentrating on what seems most relevant. Three concepts that help determine the value of assessments are reliability, validity and standardization: reliability: degree to which a measurement is consistent. Face validity: if it makes sense, seems like it will measure what it is meant to -basically seems legit. Concurrent/descriptive validity: comparing the results of one assessment measured with the results of others that are better known. Specific way to carry out the tests; larger amount of scope for individual discretion, less reliability. Assessment may be given to a large representative sample of people; those scores would be used as the standard for comparison purposes.
