Problems with long exposure: 1. camera must be very steadily aimed at object. Special motor systems are used to steady ground based telescopes against the rotation of the earth. Long exposures limit the amount of time that can be used to study other regions in space. With a greyscale image of each filter, astronomers can assign any colour they want when reconstructing the image. This is not necessarily what the human eye sees. Gas cloud re- emits emission lines from that gas. Art in science: all taken by hubble, all use filters to combine ir and visible. This is why all nebula have similar color scheme in photographs - not all nebula look similar in real life!! Used for funding - people like "pretty" things. If you don"t have good production in your art you won"t receive funding. Telescope cameras record grayscale and filters are used o separate out light.
