Guest speaker: fariah chowdhury, no one is illegal. Power and control is not the same as parental authority. Violence is structural - it"s worked into our institutions, ex. marriage manual. Use more than a gender analysis when analyzing violence. Evidence shows that women of colour are treated more poorly in the legal system than women are. White men and men of colour are treated differently in the legal system as well. You can"t just think about gender you have to think about race as well - intersectional analysis. Acknowledges violence against people who don"t conform to the gender binary, transgender people. Structural issues around gender violence - citizenship status - not reporting instances of violence because of: Reena virk, a jehovah"s witness indian girl from b. c. beaten and drowned by a group of people - race is missing from the news reports - gender only brought into question. Was burned on her forehead by a cigarette to mimic a bindi.
